Grokking the System Design Interview Alternatives: 7 Options Compared Honestly

People look for an alternative to Grokking the System Design Interview for a handful of concrete reasons. They want coding and behavioral prep in the same purchase. They learn better from video or heavy illustration. They want hands-on drilling instead of a curriculum. They want a physical book. Or they already pay for Educative and want to use what they have.

Each of those reasons points to a different product. This article lists the seven real alternatives, what each costs, and which reason each one answers.

So the comparisons below mean something, here is what Grokking the System Design Interview is. A structured course: 83 lessons in 5 chapters, with a 20-lesson glossary of building blocks, a 23-lesson trade-offs chapter, 15 end-to-end design problems, and 237 quizzes. About 20 hours of material. It costs about $59 once, with lifetime access, and holds a 4.7 rating from more than 60,000 learners.

Its limits are also plain. It covers system design only, not coding or behavioral. It is text-first with diagrams, not video-first. And it teaches rather than drills, so unaided practice has to come from you.

1. Hello Interview

The strongest alternative if your real need is breadth. One purchase covers system design, low-level design and concurrency, coding, machine learning system design, and behavioral. Written guides plus video deep dives, guided practice, and an AI tutor. The free public guides are genuinely good.

One caution if you read older reviews: Hello Interview ended its live mock interview marketplace on 31 May 2026 and refunded unexpired credits. Recommendations built on the mocks are out of date.

Choose it if: you need every round covered by one product. Skip it if: system design depth is your specific gap, or you want a one-time purchase at the lower price.

2. ByteByteGo

Alex Xu's platform, separate from his books. Illustrated courses across coding patterns, system design, behavioral, object-oriented design, plus machine learning, mobile, and generative AI system design. The diagrams are the clearest in the industry, and for visual thinkers that outweighs lesson counts.

Pricing is a one-year plan listing at $399 and a lifetime plan at $999, with a standing sale that brings them to about $189 and $499. There is no monthly plan.

Choose it if: you think in pictures, or you want the mobile and generative AI coverage few others have. Skip it if: you want a finite course with a clear end, or the subscription price is the problem.

3. Alex Xu's books

The System Design Interview volumes are the best-selling books in this category, rated 4.6 from thousands of reviews. Volume 1 covers fundamentals and core case studies. Volume 2 goes deeper into specific systems.

A book has honest advantages over every platform here. It works offline, never expires, and costs the least per hour of study.

Choose it if: you want something permanent and portable, or you simply prefer books. Skip it if: you want quizzes, structured progression, or anything interactive.

4. Educative's Grokking Modern System Design Interview

Listed partly for its size and partly because of the name confusion. This is Educative's own separately authored course. It shares the Grokking name with mine for historical reasons, but it is a different course by different authors. The full story is in which Grokking is the original.

The course itself is large: 215 lessons across 28 sections, with 21 case studies and 19 AI-driven mock interviews, built around their RESHADED framework. Access is through an Educative subscription rather than a one-time purchase.

Choose it if: you already pay for Educative, or you want the largest raw lesson count. Skip it if: you want to own the course instead of renting access.

5. System Design School

The budget option, built practice-first. Around 100 conceptual modules plus hands-on codelabs that run in Docker containers, so you build something instead of only reading. A free tier, then $45 a year or $99 lifetime.

Choose it if: you learn by doing, or price is the deciding factor. Skip it if: you want a large catalog of worked end-to-end case studies, which is where it is thinnest.

6. Codemia

Not a course at all. Codemia is a practice platform: more than 120 system design problems, a fixed answer template, and AI feedback on every submission. It assumes you already know the material and gives you repetitions.

That makes it less an alternative and more a complement. It replaces Grokking only if your knowledge is already solid and unaided practice is the one thing you lack. Full comparison: Codemia vs Grokking.

Choose it if: you know the concepts and need drilling with feedback. Skip it if: you still need the material taught. Practice cannot fill that gap.

7. Designing Data-Intensive Applications

The famous book, and the deepest resource on this list. It is also not interview prep. DDIA is a distributed systems textbook, organized by topic rather than by interview question, and reading it cover to cover in the three weeks before an interview is a common mistake.

Choose it if: you have months, and understanding matters more to you than the interview. Skip it if: your interview is soon. Read what to actually use it for instead.

Picking by situation

You need every round covered by one purchase. Hello Interview. That is its clearest argument.

You want the cheapest paid option. System Design School at $45 a year, or Alex Xu's Volume 1 as a one-time book.

You learn visually. ByteByteGo, and it is not close.

You know the material and need practice. Codemia, or write your own designs against the free case study lessons before reading them.
